Announced at Google I/O 2026, Gemini Spark is a 24/7 personal AI agent that runs on dedicated Google Cloud VMs, executes multi-step tasks across Google Workspace and third-party apps, and keeps working even after you close your laptop.

A Different Kind of AI Agent

Every AI assistant before Gemini Spark shared the same limitation: it only worked when you did.

You opened it, asked a question, got an answer, and closed it. The session ended the moment you moved on.

Gemini Spark breaks that model entirely.

Announced at Google I/O 2026, Gemini Spark is the first personal AI agent from Google that runs continuously on cloud infrastructure, takes multi-step action across Google Workspace tools, and keeps working through the night, between meetings, and across time zones.

How It Works

Spark runs on a dedicated Google Cloud VM allocated per user, keeps working when your devices are off, and is reachable via the Gemini app chat or a dedicated Gmail address you can email tasks to.

Under the hood, it pairs Gemini 3.5 Flash with the Antigravity harness, Google's agent runtime that handles planning, scheduling, MCP-based tool calls, retries, and persistent state.

Spark is organised around three operational primitives: Tasks for multi-step actions across connected apps, Schedules for time-based or conditional triggers that fire automatically, and Skills for reusable instruction sets you define once for recurring workflows.

What It Can Do Right Now

Spark connects natively to Gmail, Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drive out of the box.

Third-party integrations at launch include Canva, OpenTable, and Instacart via the Model Context Protocol, with more MCP partners rolling out through summer 2026.

For enterprise users, Spark can identify a new product request related to critical functionality, automatically suggest code changes by working with Antigravity, create a Jira ticket for the development team, cross-reference team documents to recalculate a launch timeline, and update internal status across relevant Sheets and Docs, then draft an email to relevant stakeholders confirming the actions it took.

Built for Automation Professionals

For businesses already running workflow automation, Gemini Spark represents a shift in what is now possible without custom infrastructure.

Long-running workflows that previously required a persistent local process, a dedicated server, or a custom cron job now have a vendor-hosted alternative that runs inside Google's own infrastructure.

The Agent Payments Protocol will also allow Spark to make purchases autonomously within parameters you define, which has significant implications for e-commerce and workflow automation.

Availability and Pricing

Gemini Spark is currently available in beta to Google AI Ultra subscribers in the United States. The AI Ultra tier costs $100 per month and includes five times the usage limits of the existing AI Pro plan along with 20 terabytes of cloud storage and YouTube Premium.

Google has not announced a timeline for international availability.

A desktop app version that can access local files on your machine is planned for later in summer 2026.

Why This Matters

Spark reflects a deliberate shift in how Google positions Gemini. Rather than competing in the crowded chatbot space, Google is repositioning Gemini as an operating layer for work and life, something that runs underneath your other tools rather than sitting beside them.

The move signals that persistent, always-on AI execution is becoming the new competitive baseline, and the era of the session-based AI assistant is coming to an end.
