One Year From Second Place to Total Dominance
At the AtCoder World Tour Finals 2025, OpenAI's model finished a narrow second behind Polish programmer Przemyslaw Debiak, known as Psyho, who later admitted he had barely slept that week to hold on for the win. The margin was thin enough that observers described it as a close human escape.

At the AtCoder World Tour Finals 2026, held in Tokyo on July 8 and 9, OpenAI's model won both the heuristic and algorithm divisions outright, solving all five problems in the algorithm division including two rated as exceptionally difficult even by AtCoder standards. The competition organizer, Naohiro Takahashi, posted in Japanese that he had been completely defeated and described the loss as a milestone rather than a disappointment for the field.
The Format Was Designed to Help Humans
Organizers did not make it easy for the AI to win.
The heuristic problem was chosen specifically to showcase human creativity and judgment, the kind of open-ended optimization task that has historically favored human intuition over brute computation. The contest ran across two full days, giving human competitors ample time to think.
None of it mattered. Psyho, who watched the contest closely and provided live commentary, noted that OpenAI's model put such a large gap between itself and the humans that the visible score at the top of the leaderboard was causing competitors to abandon reasonable solutions in search of a perfect answer that never came, burning their remaining time in the process.
Both Divisions Won, Two Humanity Surrenders Awards Issued
In the algorithm division, the exhibition match against human finalists saw OpenAI solve all five problems completely. At the award ceremony, AtCoder organizers presented two separate awards they called the Humanity Surrenders Award to OpenAI, one for each division.
A Humanity Prevails Award worth 600,000 yen had been offered to any human competitor who could both beat the AI and finish first. No one claimed it.
Not an Isolated Result
The AtCoder win is part of a broader pattern that has been building across 2025 and 2026.
At the ICPC World Finals in 2025, OpenAI's reasoning models achieved a perfect score of 12 out of 12 problems under the same five-hour time limit as human teams, while the best human team solved 11 with two minutes remaining. Google's Gemini 2.5 Deep Think solved 10 out of 12 at the same event, including one problem that no human team cracked at all.
Sakana AI's ALE-Agent placed first outright in an open-format AtCoder Heuristic Contest earlier in 2026 against more than 800 human entrants, though that event lacked the caliber of opposition assembled at the World Tour Finals.
What This Means Beyond the Leaderboard
Psyho framed the loss as a milestone in a broader trajectory. A machine that can overwhelm the strongest heuristic programmers on the planet, on a problem designed to favor humans, over two full days of competition, points toward AI eventually solving a volume of problems beyond what any human workforce could reach.
The result lands as OpenAI ships GPT-5.6 Sol with tiered reasoning settings including an Ultra mode that deploys multiple subagents in parallel, the same configuration that was running when a separate incident this week saw an AI agent wipe a developer's Mac.
For the competitive programming community, the practical takeaway from Psyho's commentary is precise: watching an AI lead a live leaderboard by a wide margin actively distorts human strategy, pushing competitors away from working solutions toward impossible ones. That psychological effect, on top of the raw performance gap, may make future human-versus-AI events at this level difficult to run as genuine competition.
The International Olympiad in Informatics 2026 in early August is OpenAI's next likely target.
